After being announced in June and undergone months of testing, iOS 12 is now available as a free download for iPhone and iPad. Promising to deliver a faster and more responsive experience, alongside a number of new enhancements.
The update arrives just days prior to the release of the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. And Apple Watch Series 4, which will come with today’s release of watchOS 5.
For this release, Apple has chosen to focus on performance and speed enhancements. With the new software update said to make “everyday tasks faster and more responsive”. However, there are still a number of new features.
iOS 12 includes performance and speed enhancements, group FaceTime, Memoji and new Animoji. New camera effects, AR sharing, grouped notifications, Siri shortcuts, and lots more. Plus keep track of how you use your device and set limits on apps and time with Screentime.
A summary of changes can be seen below:
Performance and speed
Apple is promising the camera will open up to 70% faster, and the keyboard will display up to 50% quicker. Apps will also run up to 2x faster when under heavy load. In fact, Apple has said iOS 12 will bring performance updates to devices all the way back to the 2013-released iPhone 5S.
Everyday tasks with iOS 12 should be much quicker and responsive, with reports of many of the animations and loading times have been reduced.
While it did not make todays release, in a future update for iOS 12 you will be able to FaceTime with up to 32 people.
Memoji and New Animoji
Create an animated emoji character of yourself, using the FaceID camera on a number of iPhone models. New animoji characters have been added including Koala, Tiger, Ghost, and T.Rex.
AR (Augmented Reality)
Measure furniture, objects, or your home using AR with Apple’s new Measure iOS app
The aim of Screentime is to give you an overview of how you or your kid is using their devices. It displays total screen time, websites visited, and apps used.
You are able to then set limits on types of apps or time limits.
This will be huge. There is now the ability to record custom phrases in which will trigger Siri to perform a certain action in apps. For example, I have set a Siri shortcut for it to get my next train time from the popular TripView app after I say “Hey Siri, When is my next train to Kograh?”
Siri can now intelligently pair your daily routines with third-party apps to suggest convenient shortcuts right when you need them.
Grouped notifications (particularly helpful for message apps)
‘For You’ photos tab with memories, sharing suggestions
New Do Not Disturb features
Third-party navigation apps for CarPlay, such as Waze.
Apple Music now has over 50 million songs. With an updated artist page, search by lyrics, Friends Mix, and Top 100 charts, finding and discovering music is easier than ever.
iOS 12 is available to all iPhone and iPad models which ran previous iOS 11 operating system. This means iPhone 5S or newer, and iPad Mini 2 or newer are all compatible. Updating is easy, simply navigate to:
