Apple Announces macOS Mojave, Arriving Spring with New Features

macOS Mojave Dark Mode on iMac

During WWDC, Apples annual Worldwide Developers Conference, the latest macOS was previewed. This is, of course, the software and operating system for the Mac Computer range.

Called macOS Mojave and due to arrive later in the year, it brings a number of new features. Ones which have been inspired by professionals, but designed for everyone to easily use and take advantage.

“macOS Mojave is a major update that introduces powerful new features for a wide range of Mac users, from consumers to pros,” – Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

Key Features

Significant new features include a new Dark Mode, Stacks, an App Store redesign, new Apps, and more. All of which makes the world’s most advanced operating system more advanced.

Dark Mode

As the name suggests, Dark Mode transforms the desktop, apps, and user interface to a new darker colour scheme. This will make the content you’re looking at or working on pop out.

It will be optional, with the ability to switch between the current light, or new Dark Mode scheme. But there will also be a feature which can automatically adjust the desktop picture to match the time of day.

Apple will also be making it possible for developers to implement Dark Mode in their apps. This will likely see Adobe, Microsoft, and more update their apps.

New Apps

A number of apps which have been on iOS (iPhone and iPad), will make their way onto Mac for the first time.

These include:

  • Apple News – Browse and read news, articles, videos, and more
  • Stocks – View the latest stock information and stats
  • Voice Memos – Record and play voice memo
  • and Home

The Home app on Mac is perhaps one of the most exciting. This is because it means you will be able to control HomeKit-enabled accessories from Mac. For example, control wireless lighting, door locks, and more.

Stacks

A new feature called Stacks will see files on your desktop automatically arranged and sorted into neat groups. This will see the messiest desktops uncluttered.

The stacks of files are arranged by file type, but we will have the option of customizing it. For example by date, tag, and more.

Other

Other noticeable changes and additions include:

  • The Mac App Store is completely redesigned and features rich editorial content and new tabs for easier app discovery.
  • Group FaceTime makes it possible to chat with multiple people at once and participant views are resized based on how active they are.
  • Enhanced privacy and security including prevention which blocks social media “Like” or “Share” buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission.
  • Screenshots deliver new on-screen controls for easy access to every screenshot option and new video recording capabilities.
  • and much more

Release Date

macOS Mojave will be available as a free update to eligible Mac Computers around the world during Spring in Australia. Apple has not specified a specific release date as of yet.
