You may have seen a number of reports around that Apple have recalled a large number of AC wall plug adapters from a number of Apple devices. The recall is indeed true, with Apple Australia announcing the voluntary recall which does affect a number of countries including Australia.
In very rare cases, affected Apple two-prong wall plug adapters may break and create a risk of electrical shock if touched.
The issue comes down to the plug, which may break and create a risk of electrical shock if touched – the defect can affect units shipped from 2003 to 2015, with the Mac and a range of iOS devices.
Am I affected?
Wall plugs which are affected have 4 or 5 characters (or in some cases, no characters) on the inside slot as shown below. If you have a redesigned adapter you will notice a 3-letter regional code in the slot which for Australia should be ‘AUS’.
If your wall charger is affected Apple is providing a free exchange/replacement.
- Exchange your adapter(s) at your local Apple Store (Genius Bar reservation recommended) or an Authorized Apple Service Provider.
- Contact Apple Support.
