Apple Unveils Apple Watch Series 4

New iPhone models were not the only biggest announcements by Apple at their Special Event. A brand new Apple Watch, the Series 4 was announced with an all-new display, fitness and health capabilities, and more.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS and GPS + Cellular models) will be available for pre-order this Friday the 14th, and in stores and online in Australia on Friday, the 21st of September.

Apple Watch Series 4

This release Apple has re-engineered and included an all-new display for the first time since Apple Watch was announced. While the original iconic design is still there, it is now thinner and has displays that are 30% larger – a significant increase for its product type. But Apple has achieved this by making the case-size and physical size of the watch smaller.

“The completely redesigned Apple Watch Series 4 continues to be an indispensable communication and fitness companion, and now with the addition of groundbreaking features, like fall detection and the first-ever ECG app offered directly to consumers, it also becomes an intelligent guardian for your health.” – Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer

Apple has also refined the back, with a new black ceramic and sapphire crystal finish which allows radio waves to easily pass through. This allows for better cellular service. The Digital Crown now also includes haptic feedback, for a better mechanical and responsive feel.

New Health Features

Apple Watch is known to be a great product for tracking health and fitness. For the first time, it will be possible to take ECG readings, allowing you to receive a heart rhythm classification. This can then be viewed in your Health App, stored as a PDF, and can be shared with physicians.

Unfortunately, at launch, this will be US-only but Apple promises it’s working on an International availability. This is because Apple has had to go to the FCC in the US to get approval – meaning Apple Watch is increasingly becoming a medical device, therefore, needs approval.

Lastly, Apple Watch Series 4 can now detect falls. The watch analyses wrist trajectory and impact acceleration to detect a fall. If one does happen and Apple Watch detects no movement for 60 seconds after a notification is given, it will automatically call emergency services.
