In a new video, Apple has given us an in-depth look into one of the newest features of the iPhone X – Portrait Lightning. The video not only shows the feature in action but the length Apple went to develop it.
Portrait Lighting
Portrait Lighting allows you to capture portrait photos from iPhone with a number of lighting and shadow effects and more. These include:
- Natural Light – Your subject’s face in sharp focus against a blurred background
- Studio Light – A clean look with your subject’s face brightly lit
- Contour Light – Dramatic shadows with highlights and lowlights
- Stage Light – Your subject’s face spotlit against a deep black background
- Stage Light Mono – Like Stage, but in classic black-and-white
To achieve all of these effects, shadows, and lighting, you would usually need to set up an entire studio. But it is now possible to get similar results with the new iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus (Portrait Lighting from the front-facing selfie camera is only possible on iPhone X).
Development
Apple has released a new video which reveals what lengths they went to develop the feature. Interestingly it involved the study of the art of portraiture and working with the world’s best photographers. Apple then combined all of this, along with machine learning, and new technology in iPhone to make the feature a reality.
The feature is powered by the A11 Bionic chip, the new ISP sensor and uses facial landmarking and depth maps to capture portraits. It is certainly more than a filter.
How To Use
The feature is available on the new iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus. To use Portate Lighting simply select “Portrait” in the Camera App and select any of the 5 effects.
