Apple Pay now in Australia with American Express

The wait is over – Apple Pay, which allows you make purchases in-store or within participating apps with your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch is now avaliable around Australia starting with American Express-issued cards. This includes American Express Personal, Small Business and Corporate Card Members using iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6/6s Plus, iPad and the Apple Watch along with the security, convenience and all the rewards and benefits of the American Express Membership.

The process is simple – all you need to do is securely set up your American Express-issued card with Apple Pay (which are not shared with Apple, or even stored on your device) and pay at any store which accepts Apple Pay by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch over the contactless EFTPOS terminal and you’re done. No need to show or give your credit card to the cashier while making the purchase.

Apple Pay is accepted in supermarkets, petrol-stations, major-stores, resturants, hotels and just about anywhere that currently accepts wireless contactless payments including Woolworths, Coles, Apple, Harvey Norman, etc.

If you don’t have an American Express Card you can discover Apple Pay with a new $0 annual fee Essential Credit Card, giving you no annual card fees (ongoing), membership rewards with every transaction and Apple Pay. How to use and get started

Adding your card to Apple Pay is easy:

  1. Open the ‘Wallet’ app
  2. Look for Apple Pay at the top, select the plus in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Scan your Card using your iPhone Camera or enter your details manually.
  4. Enter your four digit security code which can be found at the back of your card.
  5. You’re ready to use Apple Pay!


American Express is the first to come to Apple Pay in Australia, no word on when other banks or cards will be enabled. It’s also worth noting any American Express-Issues cards are currently compatible, as well as non-bank-issued American Express cards.
