Looking to purchase an iPad this Christmas? In this guide, you can get a quick overview of each iPad model including the new iPad Pro range to get a better idea of which one will be the best gift.
When choosing an iPad for a present keep in mind all iPads run iOS 10, include the same Apple-designed Apps, have access to millions of apps on the App Store and more.
You can explore more about each iPad from Apple online.
New iPad Pro
9.7-inch from A$849
12.9-inch from A$1,149
The iPad Pro range is Apple’s most advanced and powerful iPads available. They have the best hardware and technology inside and allow more to be done because they are the only iPad models compatible with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard (sold separately). With the Apple Pencil, they can draw, annotate, and do more in apps or with the Smart Keyboard an attachable Keyboard they can be more productive by typing much easier.
If you’re buying for someone who is likely to want to use an iPad as a notebook replacement, use it for university or in business, or love graphic design, drawing, etc the iPad Pro is likely the best option because of the support of the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard.
- The best iPad for creativity and productivity
- 9.7-inch display and large 12.9-inch display options
- Will run all apps smoothly including intensive apps like video-editing app iMovie
- 12.9-inch iPad offers largest screen real-estate in a iPad perfect when running multiple apps at the same time
If you’re buying for someone who just wants to do the basics and is most likely not going to want the Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard you may want to look at the iPad Air 2 – it also has a 9.7-inch display.
iPad Air 2
Prices from A$569
The iPad Air 2, like the iPad Pro, also has a 9.7-inch Retina Display and still has great hardware inside to run apps well. However, it does not have support for the Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard. They will still be able to run all the apps the iPad Pro can, however, the flexibility of adding an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard to it to get more done easier isn’t an option.
- Great for those who want a large display but likely won’t require the best performance, or won’t want to use an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard
- As thin and light as the iPad Pro
- Great for all the basic apps, photo and video editing, etc.
The iPad Air 2 is one of the best-selling iPad models and is a great option for just about everyone. If they’re going to likely want an iPad as a notebook replacement I’d consider the iPad Pro for its compatibility with additional accessories and greater performance.
iPad Mini 4 prices from A$569
iPad Mini 2 prices from A$369
The iPad Mini is Apple’s smallest iPad available with a screen size of 7.9-inches because of the much less screen real-estate the iPad Mini is best for those who are likely to just want to do some light reading, emailing, browsing, etc from an iPad. The iPad Mini 4, however, has the same technology as the iPad Air 2, in a smaller size.
- The smallest and most affordable iPad
- Best for reading, and using basic apps
The screen size of the iPad Mini will be limited when using Apps if they are likely wanting to use an iPad for anything more than general reading or basic tasks I’d consider an iPad Air 2 at minimum.
