The new iPhone 6s & 6s Plus is now available from the Apple Online Store. From the outside the iPhone looks identical to the previous model iPhone 6, with the addition of one new colour – Rose Gold. It may appear not much has changed, but in fact there’s quite a lot of significant differences between this new edition and the previous iPhone 6, let alone previous generation models.
So what has changed? A lot of the new changes are going to change the way you use your iPhone. There’s a brand new way to use the touch screen, cameras are much better, photos now display movement, and it’s much faster than before so apps, games and everything just work better.
The biggest change on iPhone 6s is the display. It not only knows when you’re touching it, but how hard you’re pressing and it’s called 3D Touch. By measuring the pressure of your finger all sorts of things are possible when it comes to using the new iPhone and apps.
For the first time, iPhone senses how much pressure you apply to the display.
This allows for things such as ‘peak and pop’ which lets you preview content without actually having to open it. As an example you’re browsing your emails or messages, instead of tapping to open the message applying pressure will preview the message without opening. Press even harder then the message will open.
New Cameras & Live Photos
Both the back and front facing cameras have received some nice updates which will bring a big improvement to the quality of your photos and videos. The back camera has gone from 8 megapixels to 12 megapixels while the front now has 5 megapixels. The lens of the camera have been updated themselves with images now sharper, clearer and better than before. It’s important to know the quality of photos are not just determined in the number of megapixels.
12-megapixel pictures. 4K videos. Live Photos.
If selfies are your thing you’ll notice a big improvement in picture quality and in low light with the screen now acting as a flash as you take the photo.
Video now does 4K which is four times the quality we’re used to seeing, four times the quality as your ‘Full 1080p’ HD TV at home. The new iPhone 6s is much more powerful, too, so you can edit two 4K videos on the go in iMovie, a free app with every iPhone and upload them directly to YouTube if you wish.
This brings me to a new feature called Live Photos. As you take photos from your iPhone 6s you view these photos as a still photo, but pressing on the photo with 3D Touch will bring that photo to life with movement and audio. Essentially the iPhone is capturing a few seconds before and after you’re taking the photo and stitching it into the photo all automatically.
At the heart of a Live Photo is a beautiful 12-megapixel photo. But together with that photo are the moments just before and after it was taken, captured with movement and sound.
So the next time you take a photo of your pet, your child playing, or anything else you’ll be able to relive that moment as it happened, with movement and sound included.
Just about everything inside the iPhone has been updated as well. There’s a new chip called the A9, which drives the iPhone and is responsible for making apps, games and everything on the new iPhone 6s much faster than before. In fact it’s 70% faster and has 90% faster graphics all with the same battery life.
Touch ID (the fingerprint scanner on the home button) is much faster, unlocking your iPhone practically instantly. Your Wi-Fi and 4G LTE will be faster too with the iPhone capable of 4G up to 300 mbps and 866 mbps over Wi-Fi.
Then comes iOS 9, the software which runs on the iPhone, and the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. The unique situation with iPhones over any other mobile phone is Apple not only designs the phone itself, but the software that goes hand-in-hand with the phone. This means everything works together in the best way possible, bringing the best user experience and performance.
iOS 9 brings more intelligence to iPhone with proactive assistance, powerful search and improved Siri® features, all while protecting users’ privacy. Built-in apps become more powerful with a redesigned Notes app, detailed transit information in Maps, and an all-new News app for the best news reading experience on any mobile device. The foundation of iOS is even stronger with software updates that require less space to install and advanced security features to further protect your devices.
Lastly, the new colour is worth a mention as it’s the first new colour iPhone has received in a number of years. It’s called Rose Gold and is the same Rose Gold in the new Apple Watch Sport. It’s a beautiful addition to the line up, and quite different from the original gold colour, giving us another option to choose from.
The new iPhone 6s is available to purchase from the Apple Online Store with free shipping to your home or work.
