Why is the new iPhone $99 in US, and more in Australia?

Many have asked why is the new iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C more expensive in Australia when it is $99 in the USA. Well here is why:

The price $99 in US is for a 2 year contract, while our price in Australia is for the iPhone unlocked with no contract. (You cannot buy it outright in the USA).

Contract pricing will be offered by all major carriers including Optus, Vodafone, Telstra etc.
