New iPad 4G – Refund Information

The new iPad WiFi + 4G model cannot connect to the Telstra 4G network.

The ACCC has asked Apple to clarify this, they have since announced refund options if you feel you have been mislead.

What’s this all about?

While the new iPad can do 4G/LTE, meaning it can connect to the next generation carrier wireless networks it cannot connect to Australia’s only 4G network from Telstra.

The ACCC has asked Apple to clarify this as they have found them to be misleading.

”This product supports very fast cellular networks. It is not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE and WiMax networks”

How can I get a refund?

If you purchased your iPad on or before 28 March 2012 on the basis that it would work with the current Australian 4G LTE networks or WiMAX networks, you may return your undamaged iPad for a full refund before 25 April 2012.

Return Process

Please follow these steps if you wish to return your iPad for a full refund:

  1. Place the undamaged iPad, power adapter and USB cable into the original packaging (if available) accompanied by your original receipt or gift receipt.
  2. Return the iPad, included accessories and receipt to the original point of purchase:
  • Apple Retail Store
  • Apple Online Store
  • Apple Authorised Reseller
  • Optus, Telstra or Vodafone Australia

Why can’t it connect to Telstra 4G?

There are different frequencies of 4G, Telstra operates on 1800 MHz, the new iPad is not capable of doing 1800 Mhz 4G.

Is it all that bad?

The new iPad supports faster 3G then the previous model iPad 2. It’s interesting to note in some worldwide tests Telstra’s 3G network via the new iPad is faster then some 4G networks in USA!

Here’s some other good information:

  • Still supports 4G in other countries such as USA, Canada etc.
  • Supports faster 3G networking
