iPad 4G/LTE – Australian Network Support – Advice

UPDATE: The new iPad Mini and new iPad Announced on October 24th WILL work on 4G/LTE Networks in Australia

Apple has announced the all new iPad 3 which has 4G/LTE support, problem is no carriers can be supported here in Australia. Here’s why:

What is 4G/LTE?

It’s the next generation in wireless internet from carriers. Note this is carriers like Telstra, Optus, Vodafone etc NOT home/office Wi-Fi.

Will iPad Mini or iPad with Retina Display work on 4G/LTE in Australia?

Yes – iPad Mini and iPad with Retina Display (4th generation) will work.

Previous model iPads including iPad 3 (‘The New iPad’) will NOT work.

    1. Don’t quote me on this but I think it’s because there’s no international Standard for LTE yet … I think … Still very annoying though :(

    1. Yes 100% If you get the iPad Wi-Fi + 4G iPad 3.

      “Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
      Bluetooth 4.0 technology
      Wi-Fi + 4G model: LTE (700, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)”

This is the 3G part: “UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)” Notice the HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA? This is a even better type of 3G than the previous iPad 2 :)

  1. I’m looking to get the new iPad with 4G here in Australia. When using it in the US in the coming months, can I access one of the US carriers that do provide 4G while I’m over there? Or will I have to stay with my Australian mobile carrie which would be hugely expensive – and so not used?

  2. Does it matter which 4G version: 700MHz or 2100 MHz (Verizon or AT&T) if you buy a new iPad in the US and use it in Australia on Telstra’s network (dual band 3G)?

    1. Hey there sorry for the late reply No it wouldnt they are all ‘3G World-Wide ready’ according to Apple :) they both have the same 3G component in it :)
